I’m a long-time BWCA.com lurker and a recent member. Since becoming active on this forum, I’m amazed at the range of topics covered and the differing opinions you can get on any one subject.
Ask any question, i.e. type of canoe, bears, firearms, destination, best fish, number of people, BWCA vs. Quetico, etc….) and the responses will run the gambit, both pro and con.
Pick a side, pro or con, and the reasons for that response can be quite different. I’ve been entertained, upset, happy, sad, enlightened, pissed off, and educated.
I think that’s because all people are different and their responses depend largely on their upbringing and life experiences. By reading the responses you can usually tell if the person is trying to be helpful, argumentative, the peace-maker, bored with the subject, or just the class clown.
With few exceptions, I’ve enjoyed participating so far. As long as the responses stay away from adolescent name-calling or becoming personal or mean-spirited (life is too short to waste time on that kind of nonsense), I say ‘Keep Paddling’ and what a great site to exchange ideas on the BWCA (and yes, the Quetico and paddling in general),
+1 because 99.9% of what passes through the site is helpful, positive, entertaining and so very welcome. We should all be thankful for what we have here--I know I am! Thanks to all who take the time to share!

I'm relatively new to this site and have made several posts in the past couple weeks. I am amazed, actually, at how kind and polite most people are. So many sites like this are overrun with trolls. Occasionally I see someone get a little testy or snippy, but all in all that's pretty rare on this site. Most people have been so helpful to me. Even if it's a question that has probably been asked a hundred times before.
+1 on all the comments, and to the people who make this board so unique.
That is why I like it, the people and responses run the gamut, of good things, be they helpful, kind, showing empathy, and last but not least, funny. Contrary opinions are fine, trolls, not so much.

I too am new to this site and have never made a "trip". Was searching for something new for summer vacation. Peace, solitude, outdoors, etc. first heard about bwca from uncle who has made quite a few trips but until I found this site I was on the fence. Now I'm sold completely from the posts of the members here. I look forward to my first trip there next summer and this site has become one of my favorites to visit almost daily. Reading trip reports is better than any outdoors magazine because you are all real people and tell the truth about the whole trip, good or bad. Thank you for the respect, hospitality and for the great pictures that take me away....
Great post. I really enjoy that on this site the "search Police" are not out in force very often. When a question is asked again and again...I find different people get to see it and the answers can change. Then you have the discussions that get off tangent but you can learn from. If it is just same old stuff I can always ignore it, but I like that threads don't often get killed just becuase they came up a week or month ago.
On another site that I like the "search Police" have almost killed it at times...intimidating new users from posting.
Thanks everyone for being so welcoming with new members. Their participation enriches us all I think.

This site mirrors those in my life fairly closely. We have something in common. This commonality we all feel at least semi-passionately about. Some of us are very..."by the book" about it. Some of us are a little liberal about it. Here is the kicker though... It's ok to disagree, but when doing so there seems to be a higher degree of respect extended to the other side. I look up to you regular posters. You have influenced me greatly over the last several years. Thank you.
