I am taking my friend (a disabled vet) on a week long BWCA fishing trip next week. We are going in on Sawbill and probably won't do a lot of portaging. I am looking for info and advice on what to fish for and where to catch them in that area. Any help would be great.

I hate to pry but what is his disability. I have gone out of Sawbill in all directions and some lakes are good only at certain times. Some are good all the time. Depending on his disability, I might tell you one lake over another.

Try Smoke and burnt lakes. As I remember the portage is not too bad. Fishing is good on these lakes.

He has degenerative nerve damage in his lower back.. he walks with a cane so can really only carry paddles and fishing poles.
and we don't care what we fish for.. i have had a lot of luck before on Alton fishing for smallies, but I want to show him more than one lake on a week long trip.

Smoke has always kinda eluded me, Burnt is pretty good for smallies and walleye. Grace and Phoebe are two of my favs. Trail lake is my fav but might be too far for you on this trip.

Phoebe is definitely to far for this trip.. we will probably base camp on either Sawbill or Alton, sense he is bringing about an extra hundred pounds of gear that I don't normally have and I don't want to carry it all. he has to have his C-pap- so it requires a solar panel and a battery and he has too have a chair with a back, etc... so ya.. not carrying it LOL.
basically I'm looking at maybe a 2 portage jump from Sawbill for day trips.

and does anyone know if there is good pike fishing on Sawbill??

Thanks for taking your friend to the bwca. During my father in laws 6 year battle with cancer I used to take him up to Kawishiwi and once to Sawbill. I have some info for you about Sawbill if you want to send me an email. You can click on the envelope under my name.

I'm leaving tonight to take my nephew up so today would be the last day for a while that I check my email.

I've caught pike on Kelso, but when I camped on North Sawbill we were catching mostly smallies and a couple walleye; no pike... though I would not doubt that they are there; we were casting the shoreline for smallies.

Hi, just got back from a 3 day trip out of Sawbill and we camped on the north end of Sawbill. I've been to the area a number of times and would not hesitate to base camp on Sawbill in your situation. I caught smallies and northerns. Stick with the shorelines and cover in the early morning and evenings, and try to find them in 10-15 feet of water other times. BTW - I left a nice pile of split firewood at the campsite at the way north end of Sawbill. Good luck and have fun.

Just got back... thank you for all the advice.. we had a great trip... the fishing wasn't very good. probably because of that rain dump and then the heat and never ending sun this week.
the fish I did catch were just... odd.... I caught a walleye about 2 feet from shore in like a foot of water while standing on a rack at my camp... and about 5 other walleyes in about 4- 5 feet of water... though the bass I caught were in more like 15 feet... seems very very backwards to me for some reason.

Next time try Veterans on the Lake Resort in Winton. They prices are right and they have everything for disabled Vets. I been going there for almost twenty years now.................
