This is sorta gonna be Diana's spring training, she's being really brave and the best wife ever, but she ain't no friggin canoe tripper, and I say that with immense love in my heart. Ya'll don't rat me out, but watch her. Any time she feels out of her element, she gets really close and puts both her hands around my arm, it's the cutest thing you've ever seen. Hahahahahahahaha.

quote nojobro: "Is the grass short enough for croquet, or should I bring a different outdoor game?
Will the group be going canoeing together? We would like to. "
I'm pretty sure they mow the area regularly since the group site are seldom occupied during week days. Bring the croquet set.

Don't worry Maxx, the other ladies will make sure she is well taken care of. At least that's what they did for Marsha when she was cold wet and miserable at the Spring 2011 WN in Minnesota.

OK. I may still bring a different one; we'll see.

Wow, I'm going to a camping wingnight where I won't need 8 layers of clothing. WOOT
Question...are people canoeing? I don't want to bring our canoe all that way if others won't be going, too. And...how long of a trip? Gotta know how many canoe snacks I need for the kiddos. :)
Looked at the campground website...only lake canoeing? Is that right? Maybe we'll save the gas on the canoe and the space in the van (no pfds)

See the little box numbered 15. If you scroll to the bottom of the map you'll see a legend for the numbers. We will be at the West Group Camp. There will be a sign on the gate. I posted my cell number in the OP. Feel free to call me if you have any problems getting there.

I'm bringing my little tandem. If I'm not using it, others can.
There are two smaller lakes in the park restricted to paddling or electric motor only. The big lake (Prairie) we are camped next to is a motor lake, but idle speed only for motors over 10 HP.
Bring the boats as the weather looks perfect for paddling.

I'll have my new ride that I just picked two weeks ago. Haven't had her in the water yet; Saturday morning might be the perfect opportunity to get acquainted especially since after Southern wingnight we'll be heading to Ely for my first solo on Tuesday.

If anyone has an SR 18.5, please bring it so I can test pack it with all my gear. LOL. (and if you seriously have one and are bringing it...let me know so I can bring the packs!)
I have no idea when I'll get to pack for this camping trip...so busy...but we'll be there somehow.

quote giddyup: "Andy, What do you need for the potluck on Saturday....main dish, side dish, meat to cook, pizza, dessert, paper goods, soda? I'm pretty local so any of those things are ok with me."
I plan to cook up a bunch of brats and hot doggies, plus bring some basic condiments. I'll also provide the paper goods and plastic wear. I'd say bring whatever you think will be a crowd pleaser. Entree, side dish or dessert. It will all work out. Looking forward to meeting you.
Oh, 4:00 PM-ish on Saturday is what I'm thinking for meal time.
05/16/2012 07:58PM
I kinda chickened out on the food. I was gonna cook a buncha stuff but I decided to get the barbecue place down the road to smoke a Boston Butt for me. I usually do that myself but I'm out of good wood and don't have a whole day to spend on it right now. If it works out I'd like to bum an hour or so of canoe time from someone, just run Diana through some basics. She has her own yellow properly fitting female PFD now. hahahahahaha, Andy I almost forgot which board I was on, that woulda been embarassing, I guess...;-)

I'm thinking it's deli time for my pot luck dish. I don't normally do that but I am so swamped right now. Not sure I even have time to pack, much less cook. Maybe the girl can make brownies and then we will deli something else, too.
Andy, do you know the park rules for dogs? Must Booker be on a leash at all times, or can he be on a tie out? Honestly he could just hang without anything and never be a problem but I understand there are rules. All he wants in life is to be near us and get petted. (oh wait...you met him already...)

I've seen no rules for dogs. Knowing Booker, he'll be just fine roaming the site. Now, my pup is a different story. I'm bringing a tie out for her until I'm sure she won't run off chasing some critter scent.
And don't be concerned about the potluck. Nobody will care if you bring store bought potato salad or whatever. Just showing up will be a treat!

I'm bummed out. The wife burned herself today helping an elderly lady clean her house. Probably won't be able to make it to wing night. She is in alot of pain and doesn't know if she can make the trip. I would come myself but her dressing needs changed twice a day. I WAS SO LOOKING FORWARD TO MEETING ALL OF YOU.Andy e-mail me and let me know what I owe for my part. Sorry everyone.

Dang Bluto! Bummer is right. Please don't worry if you can't make it. Family first buddy. Take care of the Misses. Everything else can wait and we certainly understand.

Wish I could be there with you folks this weekend...I grew up on a farm less than a mile from where you are camping! The road you turn in on to get to the campground (Wolf Rd) was named after my family. Farm was in the family for 3 generations; in the late 60's Com Ed decided they were going to build a coal-fired plant so they bought the entire Panther-Cox Creek watershed via imminent domain to build a plant and a big lake. Sucked to watch them bulldoze and burn our beautiful 2 story white farmhouse at the tender age of 13, but the Clean Air Act put the kabosh to them burning the high sulfur coal so readily available in the area, so in the mid 90's they ended up selling the whole 14,000 acres to the State of Illinois. Kind of a nice ending, in my opinion.
For those of you interested in trees, I'll divulge the location of a truly giant Bur Oak on our old farmstead; it's across the lake from you and a very mild bushwack from Wolf Road on the east side of the lake.
39°58'17.00"N
90° 3'27.40"W
Last summer I measured the circumference of this tree at 26 feet. After that, I found that there's a big tree register for the State of Illinois
Illinois Big Tree register
Per this list, the current state champion Bur Oak is 23.4 feet circumference. I found that I can submit this tree for champion status, but I still need to get the height and crown measurements. Also, not sure if it will qualify as a single tree, since it has three large trunks...they split high enough off the ground, but I need to verify that there is no seam where the three trunks would have fused as individual trees.
I encourage you to go take a look a this monster and wonder how many prairie fires it has withstood, witness the fact that it must be at least 500 yrs old and was here long before folks of European descent arrived. When my Dad took me hunting when I was a kid, we'd always stop and admire this huge old relic. Brings a tear to my eye.
If you're ambitious, go ahead and try to figure out the height and crown measurements, but PLEASE don't submit it to the Big Tree register; this thing has huge sentimental value to me and I'd like to submit it myself. I'll be down there later this summer to take the measurements.
Here's a photo of my 3 boys posing on it 8 years ago...
Have an awesome CENTRAL Illinois Wing Weekend!!!

All packed and ready to go, save the cooler food.
It's going to be interesting. Linnea fell asleep at 5pm and slept for almost 2 hours; she's still awake right now. And we have to get up early in the morning because we are going to this via Chicago for a doctor's appointment for our older daughter. We have to be in Chicago at 11.
It's always something, eh?
We hope the appointment will take no more than an hour and hope to be on our way again around noon, or 1:00 at the latest. Who knows how many stops we'll have to take along the way...I'm thinking we'll be at the campground by 6pm. See y'all then!
Oh and this owning a dog thing is still new to me. I didn't think anything of going to the doctor's appointment with the dog in tow...but it'll probably be too hot to leave him in the car. So I guess one of us will have to stay outside and take him for walks???

Hope that the accident did not disturb the elderly person. Again get well soon and try to sleep. Sorry this happened to you. Marsha and Andy

I'll be leaving around 11 this morning, so I should be there by 3 or 4. Bringing the kayak, fishin poles, and another pot of venison and black bean chili for tomorrow. Hope to see you all there.
There are no strangers here, only friends who haven't yet met!

Made it out there today. Only got in about 4hrs of chat time with everyone (just a busy weekend for me). It was well worth the effort to get there. Had a great time. It is very nice chatting with fellow paddlers that really understand what we are talking about (bugs, portaging, etc..)
Thanks Andy for putting this together. We will have to get together after our trips to share stories.
