My Marine Corps buddies and I are looking to plan a 4-5 day trip, a bit of Man vs Wild style. Fishing and forraging for food as we go.

Would like suggestions on routes and lakes. Here's what we are looking for:

Not necessarily looking to cover a large area, but we could.
Would like to minimize portages, maximize time on lake canoing or fishing.
Definitely want to get some good fishing in.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Eric

Be careful about not bringing enough food. Foraging is tough if you were serious. Fishing is hit or miss in August.

There will be a lot of ideas for you on this board. A great trip would be to head to Knife Lake. Go in from the west at Moose Lake or through the end of the Gunflint trail from the east. You can get a power boat tow from either side for a head start. Not many portages to in get in. Decent fishing and scenery. Eddy Falls in August is the best. Good luck!!

A little help for your planning.

Putting in at Seagull and heading southwest to Ogishkemuncie (Ogish) would be another good option.

I agree about the foraging unless you are talking of picking blueberries and raspberries. I was also going to suggest Seagull, to the South Arm of Knife Lake. Also, odds are you will be seeing others in August.

You're tough enough, so go north young man...to the Quetico...whoops, nevermind...it's all fished out. :-)

Retired AF here...want to thank you and your buddies for your service!

Seriously, if you're looking for great fishing, quick entry/less portaging and better campsites, you can't beat the northern entry points of the Q.

Take a tow across Lac La Croix to the Bottle Portage and stay on Iron Lake and Crooked Lake. You can't get better fishing in the BW and you're on Iron in only a couple hours, if that... paddling in from EP16 is about 8-9 hours to Iron.

Go into Basswood from Wood Lake or Moose to Wind. Big lake, famous for its fishing. Has motorboats in some parts. Wind problems. Great scenery.

Semper Fi Eric and thank you band your buddies for your service. (And happy birthday tomorrow!) I like EP 26 Wood Lake. Have base camped there two of the last three years and in August. Two years ago daytripped into Hula, Good, and Indiana and back. Not a force march, but a good workout. This year just chilled in Wood for a week. Wood has decent fishing, even in August; you won't get skunked. Gene and Jane at Packsack in Winton can hook you up. I've been using them since 2005 since I started coming up here; great people.

You could spend four or five days exploring Saganaga lake. No portages at all and the lake is huge.

We took a Marine (just discharged) in August, sure makes the portaging easier.
