Was curious what folks who use a computer to plan a route found to be best application? I'd really like to just be able to plot a route and measure. I use memory maps but a little sluggish and find google earth a little fussy, of course maybe I'm not using it as well as I could.

I use "Delorme Topo USA 9", this program can display a variety of maps/imagery, and is part of the GPS system I use. Have, and still use "Maptech Terrain Navigator", "Garmin MapSource", and "Ibycus Canada Topo".

MapMyRun.com, then I export the route and bring it into MapSource to join with the campsite, portage, & fishing info I have for that particular route.

I like MapMyRun because I can share the route link with possible trip partners to get feedback.

I have used a site called Mapcard.com in the past. It is now $30/yr to use...used to be $20. I created maps for the first few BW trips with it, inserting GPS waypoints, portages, campsites etc. Printed on waterproof map paper from REI. I don't have the files handy at the moment or I'd insert one of them. The maps looked pretty good and were a lot easier to handle in the boat, just being 8 1/2 x 11. Sort of a lot to pay for good maps, but I had a lot of fun with it.

I also use Delorme Topo, as I have their GPS too.

But for my recent solo trip to Woodland Caribou I used Mytopo.com

doubt I'll ever pay for a map again

I got this site from a messageboard thread a year or two ago and have used it's maps a few time. Have to play with it awhile to find the best maps. I usually go to the four seperate maps in the third section.
