I would say that the single most versatile lure is the jointed floating Rapala. It can be used as a topwater,subsurface or, with a sinker in front, deep running trolling lure. (This 21", just over 5 lb smallmouth was actually foul hooked in the dorsal fin).

Nice fish, I also had a ton of success this year with the "broken tail" rapala, went with the orginal color though.

Yep. Love the jointed lures.
My favorite is actually a cotton cordel - they have a Cisco color that works well in lakes where those are the bait fish.

Never fished with them in the BWCA, but on LOTW landed several northerns and my PB Walleye 26"

It is tough to beat a rapala. I prefer the original myself, but that's just me.

been using jointed raps for years.the gold/black and also the perch pattern are my favorites.its a bait that can be trolled,cast,or twitched on the surface.I like the #13 size best.
