We are going to make a trip to ester and hanson lake in mid july going to stay for 5 days. Wondering if anyone would care to share some info on best baits to bring.Going for mostly smallmouth fishing, aslo like to have some walleye for dinner. What color of baits, work best there.

Don't know if you area against live bait but...we did best on Hanson with night crawlers. We also had leeches but the crawlers did better. It was mid-July 2 years ago. We stayed at the site on Hanson near the portage to Cherry. We always had lines in the water while we were in camp and actually managed one meal just from shore fishing.

One lake over = South Arm of Knife is supposed to have good walleye fishing but we couldn't find them.

The only luck we had with crankbait was catching a nice laker on a silver spoon while trolling.

Fishing Ester and Hanson, I think you'll be disappointed if you're hunting walleye. I am under the impression that there either aren't any walleye in those lakes or there just aren't very many of them. Both do have a decent population of lake trout and smallies, though. The South Arm and Cherry both have 'eyes, but that portage to Cherry is killer.

I think leeches always do pretty well. I do much better with leeches than I do with any other bait.

been to Ester/Hanson on four trips and caught lots of smallmouth in Early August with drop shot plastic worm, dark color- black, purple, green with some sparkle, diving rapala- silver black and the inline blue fox spinning minnow gold +black worked well for smallmouth too.
