Greetings All, wondering if anyone has any old maps (or experience) of/with the Pow Wow Trail. Looks like the trail once branched off between Isabella & Pose, with several trails heading east from there. Do these trails still exist? We're going to be in the area in late August & will be interested in doing some deep brush hiking. Thanks!

This might be a good place to start.

I've seen older maps which show the Pow Wow Trail east of the Isabella to Pose Lake section. It is not maintained due to swampy areas. In the 50's the area was actively logged so I'm sure you could still see remnants of those roads which may not lead anywhere.
If you go into that area expect to get wet and whatever you do don't leave all your stuff at camp and think you can make better time without it.
Oh, and give Finland Search & Rescue a call. They know the area 'cause they do a lot of S & R up there.

We're going to try hard not to get lost! And Koda, I checked the hiking page, the west/east both lead to the same notes, looks like just the western portion (one loop) is still maintained.

Talusman, thanks, I will try the Finland S&R, maybe they'll tell us to stay the heck out of there! Even if it's just a short afternoon jaunt, it seems like it would be fun to try to locate one of those old logging roads & maybe stumble on some abandoned relics.

Here's a trip report from 2008 about the section of the PowWow Trail accessed from Isabella Lake. It looks like that section (the eastern part) is a boulevard compared to the western part, which I explored last year. See days 2 and 3 of this trip report for some perspective on the western part of the trail.

Nice trip report, & I like the "confusion" on Lake Three, we got mighty turned around in that maze for a short time too!

A good trail read for Pow Wow Trail is "Lost in the Wilderness."

I agree Corndog on the read. Lost in the Wild gives a great perspective on how easily one can get confused out there. Thats why one should always have basic orienteering skills before going into the woods. Everything ends up looking the same. At least on lakes there are different points and shore contours to follow.

I've seen Lost in the Wild noted a few times in separate reports on the Pow Wow, I'm going to have to see if I can pick it up at the library or the local book store.

I just ordered a used copy through Amazon.com. The book was $7.10 and the shipping about $4.
