Well I've been reading and posting various things for the past few months on this site and I think that it is finally time to start talking about our trip we have planned and any advice on the lakes we are going to be on as well as portage info and fishing info. Any advice would be appreciated.

First off, this is the first time my wife and I are going to be leaving our son when he will probably remember us being gone, so it is very tough on my wife and I. He is just over 2 1/2, so he really can't go along, and unfortunately, he is a mamma's boy right now, so it's very hard on my wife.

Planning on camping fri night and sat south of crane lake. entry from a shuttle down the loon river (I know the boats are dangerous for canoers down the loon and we didn't want to go this route again, but entry 14 had no permits, so we have to go in at 12)

Start is going to be at loon falls portage traveling across loon lake. This is a nice start, considering we don't have to paddle the LIS and we can get started on loon lake earlier in the day. Two years ago, we started at beatty portage and base camped in snow bay. we are thinking of traveling up slim, north/south and camping 1-2 nights on the great 5 star campsite in the middle of snow bay on the island (anyone know of the site I am speaking of?) Then, we are probably going to come back down instead of going up and around on LLC. I would really then like to spend quite a bit of time in the Heritage/Lynx/Ruby and maybe Hustler lakes areas. We are then going to be coming through shell/pauness and up LIS where outfitter can pick us up from EP 14 and take us back to crane lake. we will be on the water from sun morn. till Thursday.

Can anyone give advice on any of these lakes?? I have not read alot about really any of these lakes on this site besides shell really. I know this post is a little early, but I'm too anxious not to talk about it anymore. :)

we were just up lis, we camped on north/south for 3 days on the island site. Its a great site if you are using one large or two small tents. It has a great fire grate area. The channel leading from north lake to llc is a big mudflat. The lakes are down due to the beaver dam gave way right there at llc. We paddled thru a small channel with 4"-6" of water, without gear just two people in the boats and got stuck a few times, I dont think we would have made it with all of our gear aboard.Caught a ton of fish on north/south pike, smallmouth and largemouth no walleye but we are newbie fisherman.

The good thing about n/s lake is there is a 15' rock shoreline that makes fishing and being in the water a bit easier, and lots of wood for the fire

the portage from slim into section 3 pond is flooded and you can paddle it and go over the beaver dam

this was our first trip ever we loved the area, but we have nothing to compare it too, enjoy it

Have your outfitter shuttle your car to LIS so it's there when you come out rather than waiting for a ride to take you back to Crane.

Try looking at trip reports entering at LIS. Much of your route may be covered in reverse. My last solo included Lynx, Ruby, and Heritage and started and ended at LIS.

Likewise, The Four Solos Trip a couple years back started and ended at LIS but went up through Loon to South.

Bannock, we plan on having a car at the lis entry point. Thanks for the tip though. I'll take a look at your trip reports. Looks as though you have some experience in that area. Can you tell me of any sites on Lynx that are nice at all??

inthewoods: I looked at your photos. Are those morels that you picked?? As far as north/south, we went in from llc over the beaver dam (it's nice that it's down now, because it was a crappy take out and put in at the beaver dam) we came up into north and saw the campsite on the island. It looked to be very overgrown though (this was late august 2008) We only checked out the portage to section 3 pond and then went back to our site on llc.

This is a pic of the beaver dam before it failed.

Did you see the island site in snow bay, or did you come back down through beatty portage and out?? just wondering if you saw the heritage lake area, or anything southeast of slim??

I dint even realize that those photos were on there, I havent put any photos on since our trip must have been my son. The photo with the canoe is on south lake island campsite it shows the shoreline pretty good. Its actually a pretty good site we enjoyed it.

As for your son, you might like to rent a satellite phone so if you really wanted to check on him, you could. It also gave me peace of mind that my mother could call us if something happened to the kids that we should know about. Every day I checked for a message from her and was reassured when there wasn't any. I also called once. I have a 2 1/2 year old, too. This year we are camping at a campground right by the BW and taking day trips instead of leaving the kids with grandma.

nojobro:
Our son was only nine months old when we went up to llc 2 years ago. He didn't even recognize us when we got back. :( So this time I think things will be easier, even though he has "mamma" problems right now. We should be fine without a phone. I would love to have one, but we are going with some great people, maybe from your neck of the woods(lodi area). He will be with nana and paka.

Anyone else have any advice on any of these lakes: slim, north/south, east loon??, heritage, lynx??

I saw a trip report from someone that saw freshwater jelly's in Ruby lake?? anyone heard of that?? They are considered and invasive species in Wisconsin....

I think the only site on Lynx that I've stayed on is #62, which is the center site on the east shore. It's a very nice site.

Heritage is a river-like lake. I stayed on the southern campsite recently. It was very nice though the landing right in front of camp is iffy. Since I was solo, I chose to land further down shore. There was some old bear scat and claw marks on a tree, but I saw nothing recent and was not visited.

The Ruby Lake campsite is OK though on a slope. It is also by the portage to Hustler.

I'm really worried if we decide to take the 250 some rod portage from east loon lake into heritage as one of the portages during the trip. I've heard it's not well maintained and it is more than what the actual number of rods says it is. Any comments on that??

Lynx lake does look absolutely fantastic from some of the photos i've seen. And fairly remote as well.

What are the dates of your trip? The wife and I will be entering LIS on Sunday the 27th and going to the Loon area, and then up to Snowbay. I have done the entire loop from LIS, to Loon, Little Loon, Slim, Section 3 pond, South, Steep, Eugene, Beartracks, Thumb, Finger, the creks, Gebeonequat, Rocky, Green, Oyster, Hustler, Ruby, Lynx, L. Shell, the Paunesses, and out. Lynx is a very nice lake with several nice campsites and some good fishing. The portage from East Loon to Heritage is not fun on the Heritage side if the water is low... Friend of mine did it last year, with some newbies and nearly had a mutiny! Ask me anything and I will help if I can!

Bruce,

We are putting in on Sunday August 8th. We are actually coming in from EP #12, and getting a tow up to loon falls portage, then we will go across loon and see where we want to go from there. EP #14 was full when we tried to get a permit, but this will work as we may be able to get a little further in because we will just be starting at loon lake instead of up lis. I envy your loop soo much as I wish that we had a bit more time to do that loop. Lots of work though, and we are just not up to portaging (that much at least).

We are coming out on August 13th. I am really hoping to do alot of fishing and if you say the fishing is good on lynx, maybe we should indeed try and get over there.

Have you ever camped on the island site that is in my photo journal on snow bay?? If you haven't, I would suggest it. It is a wonderful site.

Is Lynx a very busy lake?? It seems as though it is not well traveled, maybe because it is not right on the loop??? Please give me any more advice on any other portages we may be taking.

Thanks.

Collin,
Lynx is a busy lake, the last time I was through there the best sites were taken, while some of the best sites on Shell were open! It is a good fishing lake.

Our Plan is to enter and go to Little Loon, stay there a couple of days fishing that area, and then head to the site on Snow Bay that you are referring to and stay there for a couple of days if it is open. We may also just stay in that area for a day then go over and portage into Gun and stay a night there, then work our way back to Little Loon for exit on Friday. I would like to stay another day or two but I have to pick up a canoe for a friend at Spring Creek in Iron Mountain and bring back to AR. And I do really want to drive 1100 miles on the 4th of July.

When I get back I will let you know how the fishing and the campsites were.

Bruce,

I didn't realize that you were leaving that soon to go on your trip. How many days are you going to be in?? I would love to hear all of the advice that you can give me.

I just finished reading your trip report from 2 years ago. We were in snow bay that August. That sounded like an awesome time.

Can you tell me a little bit about Gun Lake if you go there?? Looks like a beautiful lake, but hard for people to get to. Tecumish as well if you get that far. I'm really excited to know that Lynx is a very good fishing lake as that is what we are mainly going for. Keep me updated. Thanks again.

Just here waiting for Arkansas Man to get back and let me know about the trip that they had. From the looks of the reports at crane lake, they have gotten 3.5 inches of rain since last night, so Bruce, it looks to have been a very good thing that you didn't stay and exra day or two :)

You already got a little rain on Thurs, the 1st didn't you??

On a side note, we recieved our $300 immersion portage pack from granite gear in the mail on Wednesday. Looks to be about the size I had pictured it, but The material is so thin and light for a portage pack. It makes you wonder how it is indeed sooooo waterproof. Amazing!! Nice!!

Collin,
We had a great trip! Water levels were good everywhere except South/North Lake the beaver dam broke and the water levels were 4-5 feet lower than the last time I was there. Very muddy on that side too. If I was going to the Snow Bay area I would paddle up through Beatty Portage and that way. I rated the campsites that I visited in Snow Bay. We did get a lot of rain and wind, Last Wednesday night and Thursday Morning we had 3.5 inches of rain from about 3:00 am until 9:00 am. We stayed dry with no problem, but the wind afterwards made it rough. 20+ all day into our camp from the south! We did not make it to Gun this time, Plenty of wind thw whole week. Let me know if you want to know anything else.

Bruce,
You went up through slim then??? We may not go up to snow bay then considering the water level coming into snow bay from that way. That's great info for us! Thanks.

The wind must have made it crazy in snow bay all week then. I'm sorry to hear about the amount of rain. I thought that that night crane lake only got about 1.5 inches, so that amount of distance, which on google is only 10 miles west, that's pretty amazing. They need the water up there though, so in reality, it will be great for the area. I'd love all information about your trip as possible as we are going into loon area that first day. Were you near the boats at the corner of loon lake where they come around and shoot up to beatty??

We did go through Slim and Section 3 pond to get to South.

That amount was reported to us by a Forest Service ranger who checked us, after the storm went through. We had seen them the day before on LLC. He said that a Canadian Outfitter a few miles north of us reported to them that the amount of rain that fell was 3.5 inches. But like you said it was needed. We did however have over 3 inches of rain water in a pot that was left out in the open... thank God for a good Eureka 4XT tent!!

Yes, I as well have a very nice small Eureka Apex 2xt tent that is very nice indeed for serious weather situations. Did you go down into shell or Lynx at all, or did you just go straight up into snow bay?? I saw some of your comments.

Did you stay on the other island site that I have made comments on in the past?? It sounds really interesting about the picnice table that you discovered on the other island site in snow bay. How was the fishing even though it was windy the whole time??

Pictures and trip report are coming, fish were biting everywhere... We drifted in 8-12 ft of water with lightweight lindy rigs and caught the big 3 everywhere, loon, little loon, East loon, Snow Bay. We just let the wind push us down a shoreline and all I had to do was keep out in the appropriate depth.

We did not make it to lynx or shell this trip!

We just base camped on Little Loon, not knowing exactly what to expect in Snow Bay with the wind and all we just day tripped there. I don't think I would have enjoyed poling the loaded canoe through North Lake to the Beaver Dam. You had a 3-4 ft wide channel that ranged from 8-12 inches deep most of the time, and you had to push with the paddles because the water beside the boat was too shallow to paddle in.

I am planning my next trip to go to Snow Bay and camp on either the Isand spot you showed or the one we found for a while and then go to Gun, and back.

Sounds great!! I can't wait for the trip report and pictures. Yeah, I don't think that we are going to hassle with going through north/south as we have been to that lake before. Maybe I will vote to stay first night in east loon or little loon and do a day trip to slim (is it worth a short day trip to slim??), or we could set up camp and do a very short one portage trip the same evening to slim. Then maybe just go straight to heritage (sounds like if the water level holds, heritage creek may be high enough to not have a mutiny as you had stated before) and on from there.
Can you tell me a little more about lindy rigging?? Is that where you use a slip bobber with a weight on the bottom and have a jig floating above it?? I've seen some info on it and we have some small I believe they are two ounce lindy rig weights (looks sorta like a bean with a point out the end??) I've never fished with these before, but they sound as though they work unbelievable if you get the right depth. If you have any good links for how to set up a slip bobber and lindy rig, please post them. Thanks for any more info...

Does anyone else have any recent experience with this area or about fishing these lakes?? Any help as we are only 5 weeks out. Thanks.

Collin,
I lindy rig a little diferent than most, I take a slip sinker (3/16 or 1/4 ounce) and place it above a swivel to which I have attached a leader of about 24 inches for a floating jig head or 30 inches or so for a lindy float. I place the float where it is about 20 inches from the swivel and that leaves about 8 inches of line for the leech to swim on. I also use a #4 hook, mostly octopus style. We just dropped by the boat and let out 20 or so feet of line and made sure it was close to bottom. Same with the floating jighead, just keep it close to bottom. Good Luck

Well that sure is interesting. I'm not quite understanding the slip sinker portion of it, but I'm going to try and google and get some more information as I know it is really hard to try and give instructions over the internet. I think I have the general premise. Do you set a bobber then, or how do you tell if you are at the bottom or not?? I don't have a fish finder, so I cannot read the bottom of the lake. I always thought that you find the depth, then set your slip bobber to the desired depth, use that stopper thing that looks like a piece of straw they give you with a string attached, if you know what I'm talking about, and then you can drag the sinker right along the bottom, and with the slip bobber on, you will then know when you got a hit or not. I'm new with pretty much any kind of slip bobber fishing. I've only really worm fished with regular bobbers and have also done some fishing with topwaters and daredevils. Forgive me if I sound like I don't know wht I'm doing, but I really don't. Thanks for the advice.

Collin,
The method I explained to you is what I normally do when stationary fishing in swifter water. The slipI sinker allows the fish to pull the line with no resistance... I just had the rods rigged that way and found that we could catch fish doing it that way drifting slowly along the bank just far enough away from shore that you can't see the bottom. here's a link to a lindy rig site:
lindy rig
All I do different is add a foam float about 8 inches above the hook to hold the leech off bottom.

Fishing with a slip bobber or cork is just like you talked about except all I do is set the depth at about 4 ft and then through it close to the bank and work it out until I get a hit. Last week they were hitting the slip cork in about 6 - 8 ft and occasionally 10. I was using a weighted bobber with a split shot for a weight to pull the leech toward the bottom.

Anything else I am glad to help in any way!

Bruce,

I read what you had to say and took the link to that site. I am really understanding the philosophy behind this. I am lazy as I have always pretty much given up on top water baits and spinners and always gone back to the old bobber and night crawler. However, that being said, I'd like to be in the same boat as my uncle and set up a rig, throw it in and catch a nice one. And keep on going from there. Hopefully these tips really help. I will try your trick out as it seems that you are pretty much just trying to keep the bait off the bottom by using a float, right??
What I have are the banana shaped no snags that they talked about on your link. It sounds as though these will work. We will have probably 2-3 dozen crawlers along as they spoil pretty quick. I did buy some berkley gulp (some minnows and leaches). Will these work after we run out of the real thing?? I've read alot about two people fishing off the same boat, one with real bait and one with berkley and the berkley gulp took the winner. Thoughts??

Collin,
We put in a month from yesterday! Lindy rigs, crank baits, crawlers hangin' from a bobber, we are heading for a great trip. It doesn't sound worth going up to Snow Bay with the beaver dam out, maybe Oyster and back, we'll just follow the fish!

Hope you are having a great time tonight. It is going to be great. Can't believe you are thinking of getting over into oyster. The portage from hustler to oyster has a huge area of beaver logs and trees down from a recent storm. We may have to stay at husler but between husler, lynx, heritage, shell, and loon we are going to have by far from what i've heard the best fishing I've ever experienced in my life...

Of course Arkansas Man is helping very much right now with my future endeaver...:)

I will sincerely try my hardest to fish the best I ever have in my entire life!!! I think that's what makes the BWCA so special for me is that it's an area that you have to GET TO and actually be willing to sacrifice sometimes in order to get where you want to truely be.

I'm truely hoping that this trip will be the best I've ever had going up to the true wilderness. Full trip report defiinetly when I get back, and I'm sure that JIMNDABWCA might put a trip report in as well. It's fun to share what you've experienced to those who find it interesting.

Collinal-

Just stayed on the site you note in middle of Snow Bay on your earlier recommendation - it was very nice.

Came from LLC down to EP 14 and never saw a power boat of any sort (except parked USFS boat on Loon).

Water levels high as of July 7 - don't know how fast it will drop.

BillConner,

I just read your trip report!! It is amazing that you spoke of the small "shower area" that we made of flat stones!! It's pretty nice taking a shower in the middle of a bunch of pine trees, right?? :)

We did not however make the Chair!! That took alot of time and looks to have been there for a while. Did you like the latrine?? little chipmunks would come out onto the path as I would try and do my business and just kak at me like I was annoying the heck out of them. Was it hard for you to find wood??? We had to do some major searching on that island for good wood to use. It was great though. We actually saw a boat that was in the northeast part of snow bay. Must have been fishing, but it was illegal since the boats technically could not come into the bay. Didn't get a picture though. The nice part about hearing the boats go by is that we knew if we did something stupid or something happened to us, all we would have to do would be to paddle out to the middle of the lake and get picked up by someone.

I am so impressed that someone actually finally commented on that site. Nice trip report. Only 4 weeks till we are in. Full trip report to come. We probably are not going to go to snow bay as the beaver dam that people have spoke of broke and we have already been the way of Beatty portage, so we will go east.

Possibly getting as far as Oyster as my uncle had suggested. Did you fish at all on your trip?? I can't recall you talking about fishing alot???

Edit to previous post:

I do not condone building anything out of the aspect of leaving it be true nature, however that being said, the couple of neat features to the area I was in and the ones that we "built" do not effect the overall nature of what the BWCA is.

I believe that we can get to ep 14 in 6 hours from lynx lake on the last day after looking at another post. That gives us some much time (approx. 4 days) to explore a guite a few nice, nice good size lakes that may have some nice fish in them from what I have heard,
Can anyone give me the water level report in this are as we are now only 2 short weeks from entry?? I have heard reports that there are almost record July rains for Int. Falls, which is not that far from where we are putting it?? There can't be any fire bans, are there??

The water was high one week ago. The falls at the Elm portage were running the highest I'd ever seen, and there was foam all over the river. The MCC was adding a new raised walkway along side the river just below the falls. It made the portage much nicer as it eliminated the muddy section(which was all under water. The water was at the base of the steps coming down from the E.P. 14 parking lot.

Sorry - I missed this post until today. Didn't fish and mostly used a stove so firewood not an issue for us. Of mixed opinions on improvements but not disturbed much by stone and local wood with no rope or fasteners.

We really appreciated the site - thanks for the tip.

We are now maybe looking at going into Oyster, but with the portage possibly being very hard to navigate, we may just have to stay on Hustler, Lynx, Shell and Heritage....I'm not complaining!! :)

The best thing I'm looking forward to is possibly getting the western campsite on Lynx on Tues or wed night. They say it has a perfect facing to the northeast as that is where the Persieds meteor shower is going to be. As well as a new moon, I'm looking to hopefully share with a little bit of time lapse luck some beautiful pictures for all...

I cannot believe only 2 days till we leave town. We are staying at Echo Lake campground on Fri and Sat night, but it's still part of my vacation that I have soooo needed for 4 months now. Finally here!! I am taking a journal this time and lots of pics so I will hopefully have a great trip that can be enjoyed by all.
Decided on taking a 1 liter nalgene bottle with vodka and the wife will take 1 liter of malibu. The other two in the group are bringing a bag of nice red wine and a bunch of Jack Daniels.
Plan is to head east out of loon to heritage, down to lynx first night and then east from there to hustler, ruby and maybe a day trip across the bad portage to oyster. we a definately not going to take full gear to oyster. coming back via little shell, shell and up the lis.
Is it worth the "bushwack" to yodeler?? although the water level being pretty high, may not be a problem getting anywheres, including the portages on the pauness lakes coming out on the last day may be easier than it could have been otherwise. Input before we go please.

Oyster....the two sites on the penninsula are very good. Decent SMB fishing (trout will be deep). The sites on Green and Rocky are kind of small, best one is on Green. There is a small picto on Rocky....it's marked in the map section.

"What could happen?"

I think there is at least one trip report about a 'whack to Yodeler. There may be more. Read it, and decide for yourself. IDK if it's worth the effort, but there are worse things one could be doing :)

Trust, but verify.

Very true Amok!! I guess it just comes down to time, and then saying "Hey, maybe we should go down river and check that lake out!!" And then just doing it because you can. Guess that's what I'm so excited about, just going and doing what I want on this trip.

This is the least amount of people I have gone with. First time was 7, second time two years ago was 5, and now only going with two couples. Should definetly be a great time. I cannot believe we are leaving on Friday to start our car travel. Will be signing off tomm. night. Till then....Northern Lights tonight....Going to go and see if we observe anything outside.

Thanks everyone who has kept this post alive for this long. I will give full trip details when I get back...Well, maybe not full trip details.. :)

Oh and we WILL have fun, no matter what gets tossed at us...hopefully no weather. I wouldn't mind seeing as much mother nature as possible, true mother nature at it's finest.

We are back, got home today after staying at the casino last night. Weird thought popped into my head today as I was driving home from Tower....We left very early, way earlier than expected and I realized that I possibly could make it home in time for the last times on a city golf tournament. I called my friend and there was a spot for me. So I flew home in 5 hours, unpacked half the car, said hello to my son who I haven't seen in a week, and went to the golf course.
Needless to say, I have another day of golf yet to be played, I'm in 3rd place, and so my trip report, well... that's coming sometime. It was the best trip I have had however in my 3 trips to date.

Finished the golf tourney in 4th place. Not bad after 4 portages over 250 rods and a few more than that. Will start my trip report soon.
