We've done steak and potatoes, wondering if anybody has done anything a little more interesting.

Almost always do steaks the first night.

When we first started in 1971 Spartan1 said the traditional first night meal was steak and oranges. We always took steaks and big navel oranges.

Same as Mr. Barley...since my plate looked exactly the same, I won't post a picture.

What are the dates for lobster season in BWCA?

This year I foiled garlic ring bologna with lots of sauerkraut and fried potatoes. Served with warm buttered dark rye bread. It was very good.

Sounds awesome, but mooseplums banned sauerkraut on our trips...you may want to ask him why.

Nothing beats a big thick cut steak on the first night.

This will be about the 3rd time Mr. Barley's pic has prompted me to grill out or visit the local steakhouse! We have also done marinated chicken breasts (in condensed mushroom soup) with mushrooms and wild rice. I think Mr. B has the ticket though.

I freeze and then keep our Ribeyes for use on the 2nd night.

For the first night's meal, at home I take the meat off of a rotisserie chicken, cut into smaller pieces and seal it in a heavy freezer bag. At our campsite I add this to lots of (5 packets) of chicken gravy, and serve it over instant mashed potatoes. Also cook up frozen sweet corn to go along with it. Serves six. Mighty tasty, and.... it's easy to prepare and easy to clean up.

Oh yeah, then Oreos or Little Debbie walnut brownies for desert. Yum!

Our favorite first night meal is fresh fish preferably Walleye. I can have steak the other 50 weeks out of the year. Nothing compares to the BWCA catch of the day.

Steaks can't be beat. Easy to cook, and soooo tasty.

Mr. Barley has inspired us to go beyond just steaks and bring along some tasty seafood. The past trip was steaks and shrimp scampi. This year I believe we are going with rock lobster. I do not not mean the B52's song.

We did filet and shrimp kabobs this year. Nice treat after a long day coming in, plus the overnight drive from Chicago.

Steak, Bake potatoes and a bag of ceasars salad. We bake the potatoes for about 45-60 minutes at home depending on size so all we are really doing at camp is heating them through while the steaks are cooking and the bag salad has dressing in the bag, pretty easy meal.

BTW - steaks first night, but every night after - we've always had the fish we catch...always.

We freeze ham and wrap it in newspaper for the first night. We dehydrate applesauce to go along with it. It works pretty slick and tastes great after a long day of paddling.

I have found that no matter what you eat, it tasted better in the BW than anywhere else. We have no first night gourmet meal on our trips anymore. We go too far and try to be too light to bring in potatoes and steaks.
Last year's first night meal was - lake trout grilled, cream style corn, and chicken flavored stove top stuffing. I know it doesn't sound like something you would order at a restaurant but they do taste awfully good around the campfire.

This was the first year we have done steaks, and it will now become a tradition, by far the best meal we have ever had in the bdub.

Steak yes...potatoes yes...but we made the mistake of picking broccoli as the vegetable. Unbeknownst to us, unrefrigerated broccoli really lets off an odor. Unfortunately, the first night meal didn't fit in the food pack so we stored it with a guy's clothes. While portaging the first day that pack became known as "Big Stinky". Just sitting aft of it in the canoe was enough to get the occasional whiff. Despite the odor it still tasted fine but we all agreed that broccoli will never make the trip again.

First night is steak.

Second night I stuff a cornish hen (sometimes stuffing, sometimes just shove some onion in there) and double-wrap in foil then cover in hot coals for about 40 minutes along with a tater. Frozen bag of cornNothing better...

Have considered freezing corn into water in some type of container to aid in keeping the hens cool inside collapsible cooler...

Anyone else out there have experience vac sealing cooked chicken? Haven't been able to get a Jennie'O cooked turkey or chicken breast for years here in central Iowa. We like to have BWCA Thanksgiving the first night as a special treat for my oldest progeny. Not a fan of foil chicken.
