I've posted this photo in other threads before, but it's my favorite sunset photo due to the great memories of a perfect Labor Day weekend getaway it conjures.
Rlhedlund, that picture is powerful, reminds of a poem I wrote:
I-35, somewhere north of Ames, dad's old canoe strapped to the van.
Our tires swallowing lines as we make the late push for the north woods.
August heat and memories drove us out of Omaha hours ago.
The Twins are on the radio, our two girls talking softly in the back seats.
My wife and I exchanging small talk and big eyes, while closer still, Our baby boy sleeps.
Thunderheads pile up in the eastern sky
Their peaks grow pink in the glow of green corn and a setting Iowa Sun.
I am half certain of the smell of a cigarette being smoked by the Soul of my father as he rides along with us, somewhere in this van,
Cheering, longing, hoping for us
As we speed north into the darkening night.
Hey ChadLeo, I was in site #2 from June 11-14, 2009. Which site were you at? I probably talked to you. Just didn't know we were fellow bwca.comers. I met cowboymac that weekend also.
ducks, I was on site #1 from June 12th-14th with a blonde girl. I had the black VW Jetta, was that you I spoke to about Volkswagons? I should have worn my bwca.com shirt. Haha.
ha ha, yep, that was us. My father in law asked you about the Jetta and ended up buying one that Monday right after we got home. I think you were his last bit of research. I should have worn my shirt too. I wore it there the year before and there weren't any other bwca.comers around. This year I don't wear it and the sites on both sides of me have bwca.com members.
There are so many gorgeous pics here there is no point in me entering with the hope of winning, but I'll enter anyway. ;-) I do not envy the judges...I don't know how I'd ever pick a favorite!
This picture was taken in June 1998, and I don't know exactly which lake but in the area of Horse Lake.
I agree nojobro, there are some amazing shots here this month! I think Adam has lost his marbles picking this theme for the month, if not, he certainly will trying to pick a winner! Whomever it is, they should be proud to win amongst such strong competition!
Captured this on a early morning at Lake Phoebe. Watched this Moose and her young one for some time. This was a great first site to see when I walked out of the tent that morning.
Nelsonone- that is one fantastic shot! I thought it was a double exposure at first but then realized I was seeing the trees in the background through the fog. Very nice!

nelsonone- I'm sorry for taking liberties with your photo, but I couldn't not show you after I did...it feels like it's a million years old- guess it is.

I stand corrected. I didn't think it would be possible to pick one winner, and then I saw nelsonone's picture. It'd be great, like many on here, without the moose...but add the moose and it's absolutely fantastic. I hope I get to see something at least half as neat as that on my upcoming trip. Wow.
gutmon- NP on the photo, I have never looked at this picture as a black and white. I think I may have to print one for my office to put next to the color one I have.
Thank you everybody for the kind words! This is one of my prize photos from all of my BWCA pictures that I have taken in the last 15 years. I hope there are many more to come.
The pictures in this month are all so perfect, I am glad that I am not a judge it would be hard for me to pick any one of these.
How about I print two and send both to you? If you could sign one and send it back I would love to have one in my office as well. (good to have early stuff from people before they become famous...)

nelsonone, your picture is like, National Geographic, end-of-year best-of photography stuff. That's the best picture of the BW I've ever seen. The trees peeking through the fog in the background added to the mama and baby moose, I can't believe that picture is real. I'd love to hang that puppy on the wall as a 10x12.
Stunning pictures.
Nelsonone - truly a winner, what's your camera?
Lostreef: love your pic too, more curious about what the hell's going on in your profile picture...?
Earl-
I have a Canon Rebel 300d with a Sigma 28mm-300mm lens. That picture was shot at about 220mm. I use a Carbon fiber tripod with a standard run of the mill head. Some day I will upgrade (when I win the powerball)! :) Thank all of you for your kind remarks!
I keep getting drawn back to look through these pictures. They are incredible. I wish my one and only trip for the year wasn't over already so I could be seeing a few more of these in person. Good luck judges.
May waters rise to meet you.
May wind and current be always at your back.
May the Good Lord paddle with you,
And may yours be the lightest pack.
Amazing pictures everyone, they're going to have a very difficult time choosing a winner from all those great photos. Those pictures are what I imagine heaven looks like !!
" I want to know Gods thoughts , The rest are details " Albert Einstein.
Hope it's not too late. I'm sure not a winner but this was taken in 2008 on upper Pauness.

The winner of the July photo contest is Spartan2! A very tough month to vote as the sunset/sunrises theme tends to be. I am sure we will see a number of the entries in the year end contest.
The trip report contest winners is dan1523!
The extra hat goes to twincy.
Thank you everyone for sharing such great photos and trip reports!
