Canoe dog

Zulu	05/07/2012 11:27AM Freddie my 15 year old Beagle always loved motor boat, kayak, and canoe rides until last summer. She was attacked relentlessly by stable flies, or ankle biters and now she wont stay in the boat. While canoeing Moose River north and Lake Agnes and again on a Lake One trip they bit her on the top of the head and I couldn't stop them from the back of the canoe. Even last fall when the flies were gone she nervously paced back and forth and jumped out of the canoe into icy water. She just can't relax in a boat anymore. She has always hated swimming and getting wet and doesn't even like to walk on wet grass so she must have been traumatized enough to jump in the water. I am going to try her in the kayak later this week to she if she is any better but once the flies come out she will be shore bound. Long haired dogs may be better protected than the short haired breeds.

Intrekid	05/07/2012 09:42AM My pup is not a swimmer until we get out in the lake country! His first trip up, at the end of a portage, he just decided on his own to go take a dip. It was really cool to see him enjoy himself. He has always been comfortable in a boat (probably because we found him on the way to a put in and he took his first river trip at around five weeks old). He also gets very excited when he sees the gear come out and the boat come off the car. After that initial excitement dies down, he sleeps the day away while in the boat then explores the shore until nightfall. A good canoe dog can't be beat! After about four years, it's hard to imagine a trip without him. At this point, knowing how much he obviously enjoys being out there with me, I'd feel bad leaving him at home.
nojobro	05/07/2012 12:05AM We didn't take he canoe off the vehicle until today. when we did, Booker seemed to get excited and kept looking from the canoe back to us. Such a good doggie. :) He is also not afraid of storms and rarely barks (he didn't bark once today and we even had company). So I think he's going to be a great BW dog. Not sure yet if he likes swimming.

Passed the kids test 2. Passed the camping test 3. Passed the canoeing test I have found that dogs are very intuitive. They will love what you love. They read us like a book, and instinctively know how to respond accordingly.

Oh forgot to mention: we ran into three people we knew while on the water! Weird. (one solo canoe and one tandem). We just went out near rutabaga; we wanted to stay closer to shore just in case.
arctic	05/05/2012 08:55PM From my experience, once a dog has had an enjoyable experience and feels secure in a canoe it becomes a tripping dog for life. Congrats!
