overthehill	07/08/2007 10:41PM Cliff Wold's does alot of scout groups, I hear and Dan Waters of Canadian Waters has been doing it since 1964. I'd say they know the ropes and don't leave out any hidden costs/details/surprises etc.
BTravlin	07/08/2007 06:56PM I just returned from a trip outfitted by Robin & Scott at Echo Trail Outfitters and everything went very well. Super nice people.
go solo	07/07/2007 11:09AM As Bentshaft has pointed out, the effort to save a few dollars may result in more expense and less fun. The outfitters LIVE in the BWCA. You may rent the equipment, but their knowledge on the area you travel is priceless. Try having a fund raiser of some sort. Any decent human will understand the value of the experience you area about to give those kids. If I may suggest one thing, that every kid get a map or maps of the area you travel marked with the places you stay. Give them to them after the trip as a keepsake. I went for the first time when I was a young teen and know we traveled off the end of the Gunflint, but sure would like to have a map of where I went.
crash99	07/06/2007 06:56PM Scott and Robin at Echo Trail Outfitters are awesome, some of the nicest people I've ever met. If you need any suggestions on where to go or what there is to see just ask them, they seem to know where everything is in the BW.
dalehoch	07/06/2007 07:17AM I have been taking high school students for four years now. The last three years I have taken 24 kids and 8 adults for a week long trip. Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters is by far the cheapest way to go. I believe the week trip, fully outfitted is $229 each. It would be hard to buy food for that much. Bonnie at GNO is GREAT!
bentshaft	07/06/2007 07:14AM If you are going borrow canoes I would guess they will be aluminum. Aluminum canoes will cost about $22/day to rent in Ely. If you are puting 2 per canoe this will cost $44/ head to rent for the trip. These canoes will be set up for portaging( the borrowed canoes may not) and this will also give you access to the outfitters experience and knowledge of fishing spots, campsites, and items of interest. Many outfitters offer showers at the end of the trip with canoe rentals as well. There is also the added hassle of cartopping the canoes all the way up. You will have to decide if the cost is worth it. I personally find the rental expense well worth the cost.
Helpful Paddler	07/06/2007 01:05AM I am planning a 3-4 day trip to the BWCA either out of Ely or Grand Marais with our church youth group (aka kids without money or who use their parents'). We are debating on whether we should find and haul canoes up for our group or try an outfitter. We are looking to keep the cost of the trip down as much as possible, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
