Rock: I have a trip report that includes the Wawiag R. and Kawa Bay portions of your loop. Trip Report It may be tough to get recent info on the Wawiag, so be prepared for just about anything. --Goose

Basswood River borders both Q and BW. Portages are a little longer, but you should be able to fairly closely figure your distances and time in Q as well as you do in the BW. Best of traveling graces for you.

chipaddler, I have sent you an invitation to the Private Group Quetico Afficionados. The info on the PCD is valuable but some of it is wrong, don't count on the marked campsites to exist, or the portages to all be where they show on the PCD. fishguts

Hi Rockstaron
I am planning first Q trip this year as well, so obviously no direct knowledge of the area. That route looks challenging and I'm very interested in your trip report when done.
The sites I've been using to help with my planning are:
bwca.com members of course
quietjourney
quietjourney some decent info on the portages
and PCD
The PCD is an interseting database on campsites in the Q. Be wary of this though. From what I can tell, the campsites are compiled from many different maps and user input. Basically, they may or may not be there. I'm only relying on ones that actually have comments or ratings to actually exist.

Hey folks! So I've decided to outfit through Seagull for our first Q trip and we've decided on this route:
http://www.seagulloutfitters.com/canoe-routes/boundarypoint-mack-fallschain.php
Has anyone rolled through here before that has any suggestions on sites, fishing, portages, rivers, anything? I've been searching diligently for trip reports to no avail, and the topo maps from this site don'y have info on the Q like it does with the Bdub (options for comments, fishing spots, etc). Any and all information is helpful. Because this is our first trip to the Q, I want to be as prepared as possible and I figured asking the experts would be a great resource on top of the research I've done and am continuing to do. Thanks a million!

As I was reading your original post, the Man and Falls Chains came to mind. Then, as I scrolled down, I find that Ho Ho beat me to it.
This is an excellent route. The Man Chain is beautiful with it's high cliffs and the Falls Chain is awesome with it's river paddling, neat portages and waterfalls (obviously). And once you get to Kawnipi, you can head back south to Prairie Portage via Agnes. You'll get to see Louisa Falls along the way, too!
I think I just talked myself into taking this trip next summer! :)" My son and I did this exact route several years ago - used 12 nights out. Probably had 3 or maybe 4 layover days. Nice route.

Ha, you have a fun problem on your hands. Where to go?? It takes me months to nail down my trip plans because there is so much to see.
There have been plenty of good route suggestions so I won't give you another one to consider. But I will mention one more thing.
I kind of see Quetico as two sections. The north and the south. Overall, and generally speaking, southern Q is more like the BWCA with smaller lakes and many portages. Very beautiful.
Northern Q is big beautiful lakes that stretch on for a long ways allowing you to paddle dreamily along. I have a fondness for northern Q as it feels farther away and more unique as compared to the BWCA.
Wherever you go you will be happy. Try to get off the beaten path a bit during your trip to get the feel for the solitude that the Q has.
I have a giant map 6' high by 12' long in my back room of the BWCA and Quetico. It's all the fisher maps laminated together. My wife gave it to my for Christmas many years ago and It's a great way to plan a trip. I spend many hours every year looking at it and checking out what people write about when I read this forum.

Kawnipi would be a definite target. All rivers in the area flow into Kawnipi so going in through Agnes or one of its neighbors or through the Fall chain is your choice. The man chain is a beautiful paddle and catching a breeze from the southwest can make for good paddle time so most people go in that way. It is an easy two day trip from Prairie Portage into and out of Kawnipi. If you like falls there are several more northwest of Kawnipi and can make great day trips. Some nice rock outcroppings on Kawnipi are spots guaranteed to catch walleye and the river coming from Agnes into Murdoch has always produced as well. The lake is known for good fishing. Rose island is rose granite with a nice pond that had a beaver lodge last time I was there. I will go back.

you could be flown to Clay lake from Sag, paddle the greenwood and wawiag rivers to Kawa Bay and Kawnipi, then come up the falls chain to Cache Bay and exit on Sag.

One trip I have always wanted to do would enter through PP up through Shade to Kashapiwi and into Kawnipi. Layover a day or so and then up the falls chain and back out the man chain. Think this could be done in 8 days with a layover or two easily, especially if you get a tow up Moose to PP and then back again. Haven't been back to Kawnipi in a long time and didn't get to spend a lot of time there.
Has some good portages, Kashapiwi route is almost like a river with Maligne falls chain on the way out.
Would like to get back to Sturgeon again and then down the maligne and out LLC but can't really see a good loop in my head that can be done in 8 days without some hard paddling.

The possibilities are endless! I think one good starting idea for planning would be a trip involving the Falls Chain and the Man Chain. The Falls Chain is on a stretch of the Maligne River between Saganagons and Kawnipi. It's not a long stretch of river, but it's spectacular with lots of waterfalls (hence the name). I think the Man Chain is a wonderful series of lakes, and it is a natural part of a loop involving the Falls Chain. Then there are several options for connecting the two on the west side of the loop. One is from McEwen up (south) McEwen Creek over a series of small lakes to Louisa then the southern end of Agnes. Another is up through Kawnipi and then down one of three routes to the northern end of Agnes. There are other options, but those would be the most likely for an 8 day trip unless you are a crazy paddler. You can do this loop starting either at Cache Bay (access from Gunflint) or Prairie Portage (access from Ely/Moose Lake).
Don't forget to include a toilet trowel in your equipment, as well as a grill if you cook on the fire. Latrines and firegrates are not supplied in Quetico!
PS - Sometime later this winter I'll be posting a trip report of this loop involving the McEwen Chain.

Kawnipi is an awesome lake with many day trip options and many ways to get there and leave. My last trip there was similar to BillOconnor01 from PP through the Man chain and then north to Kawnipi with exit through Agnes. I have also gone in through the Gunflint Trail and the Sags. Quetico is beautiful and I am sure you will find it a good time.

Do you know where you will enter - at least as far as north or south - and could you consider (OK - afford for me) a plane or other long shuttle? Challenging would be beaverhouse to gunflint trail.
I really liked my trip out of PP up the man chain and back down through McEwen and Louisa; but lots of opportunities out of Beaverhouse.
So many choices. Look at going from Moose Lake/PP down Basswood to LLC and out LIS - with a not too expensive shuttle back to Ely or Moose. We took 12 days not pushing, maybe 4 layovers - but you could do it in 7-8 and still have a layover.

Hi everyone! Longtime BWCA paddler, first time Quetico enthusiast here. Next May, my trip partner and I plan on embarking on a 7-8 day Q trip. We're looking for a challenging route, preferably one with a river in it somewhere, that we can can hold at least 2 layover days on (the trip not the river). I'm a fairly decent trip planner in the bdub because I know it well, but have close to no Q experience. I'm looking for a challenging but fun loop suggestion. We're both 26, in good health, and ready for whatever the Q can throw at us. I know these trip suggestion posts can get a bit tiring but aside from reading trip reports, which I do frequently, I feel this is the best option to gather info from the experts. Any and all help is appreciated!
