quote SevenofNine: "Bought an Asolo Velocity 3 earlier this year for me and the wife. I'm happy with it. Decent size to weight ratio and has lots of screen for ventilation.
I like the design because it is straight forward. I can open the vestibule on good nights and do star viewing which is a nice touch because tents with vestibules tend to be pretty closed up feeling to me. All in all a nice tent.
Asolo "
Nice looking tent, great price.

Found an Alps Vertex 4 on sale a couple years ago. It has been a good tent. Some friends used it this summer and were also impressed with it. The deal listed is a very good price on it.....usually around $200.

My son and I use an Alps Chaos 3. Between the 2 of us we're about 6 feet and 400 pounds, plenty of room. We've played cards in it several times. Also got rained on 3 days straight, never a problem. If you shop it hard you can find one in the 150 range, Amazon is a good place to start.

I've known for years that Asolo was solid for hiking boots, but only found out recently that they do tents as well. Sounds like they're pretty solid in that department too, so far.

The Eureka Timberline 4 actually will fit four but three more comfortably.
More importantly it has very little mesh. Mesh is not always a good thing. And the Timberline has no condensation problems and good ventilation.
timberline 4
the Outfitter version has thicker floors and is a little heavier.

quote strom2127: "just used REI's 30% off on their clearance gear to acquire their Quarterdome T3 today for roughly $175!! Very excited about the deal as it was previously $250, which was marked down from $350 I believe. I'm typically a hanger, but needed to start acquiring some other gear as my son will soon be joining me on trips and I don't think he'd be too excited to sleep alone in the tent for the first year or two."
Nice score on that T3, I noticed that deal, I'd picked up the T2 plus in August for a bit more than you paid for the 3 person. You're gonna like it.

I've got the REI Half Dome 4. It has plenty of room for two and can be found on sale. Very dry and stable in the wind. Along with that is if you buy the tent at REI and don't like it or have a problem with it later they are great to deal with.

Snake is right, so if you are looking for a 6-person tent, I think you'll have a hard time finding a quality tent for under $200. If on the other hand, you truly are looking for a 4-person tent, I got my Marmot Hideaway 4-person tent for $225, just over your price tag. I love this tent but I don't think they make this model any more. It's perfect for two guys and gear. If you're looking for a tent to fit 4 guys, then I can recommend the REI Basecamp 6. This is a brick $hithouse of a tent. I love this thing. I can stand up in it, front and back doors, large vestibules and it's perfect for 4 guys.
Here are some pics of each tent:

i'm taking for granted that you know MOST 4 man tents are often only comfortable for 3 unless you are small people and hardly any extra baggage in the tent. I like the Alps Mountaineering Meramc 4 Outfitter model for 3 and super roomy for two. For 4 people I like the Alps Taurus 5 OF (outfitter model). You see ALOT of both of these among the outfitters up there too. Not SUPER backpacking lightweight, but not bad either. The outfitter models have a heavier oxford floor, Bigger (#10) zippers, and aluminum poles which are stronger and lighter. Eureka's Timberline used to be a good middle of the road dependable design too. I'm just partial to domes. if there is a Boy Scout among you, alps m. will help with a substantial discount as well.

I agree with snake. 4 adults = 6 person tent. To make comparisons, I use a minimum of 20 square feet per person, inside space, for an adult. smaller kids obviously less sq. ft.
Kelty tents from my background are good value and will keep you dry and are good in the wind. Buttress series, Gunnison series, Teton series, all good types from Kelty.

quote bigdriver: "Looking for a good tent less then 200 bucks 4 person that will keep you dry? Any ideas appreciated." Are you actually looking for a 4-person tent, or a tent to fit 4 people comfortably? Unless you're from Munchkinland, you will likely find a 6-person tent to be more accomodating for four. Just a thought.

The REI Camp Dome 4 is $199. For $259 you can get the REI Half Dome 4, which is two and a half pounds lighter, offers a vestibule, and has full rain fly coverage. With the fall 20% off coupon, those are $159 and $207, respectively. I'd take the $7 over budget and be happy if I were you. ;)
