actually now the highest sustained winds look to be late sat into early sun ahead of a light rain event.
The link posted above is very general and usually a computer run or two behind.

You should be far enough away.....
but late last week the forecast for Monday (the day the fire exploded) was very similar to this one,, just slightly less wind and lower temps and the wind being from the South rather than West and NW. I wouldn't be surprised to see slightly higher sustained winds late Friday into Saturday.

be careful. they have the area closed to your west and SW for a reason.

fire area forecast

Go - enjoy your adventure - know you are in good hands. If you need to get out they know where you are and how to get you to safety in plenty of time. I believe they have made some good headway on it. Pray for calm winds or no wind. Enjoy

I also know the folks at Gunfllint Outfitters...not to worry you are in very good hands...enjoy your trip.

I agree with Alpine. Gunflinter is a very reliable outfitter and would not send you into danger. Even if something does happen, they will advise the authorities of your planned route so they can come in to escort you out. You are in Good Hands.

Welcome to the board Sam and have a great time.

Welcome to the board Samantha, look forward to hearing about your trip when you get back.

I don't think anyone could say with 100% certainty that you would be completely fine from it, but I would say it sounds extremely unlikely that it would be a problem. 40 miles is a long way. I know the fire moved 16 miles in one day earlier this week, but that was termed "unprecedented."

Welcome to the board.

You like to trip during the years with big fires, eh? 2007 was another doozy, but that was in the spring season.

Good luck - I hope the trip is fabulous.

Samantha,

If there were any danger, I'm certain Gunflint Outfitters would advise you not to go, or, advise you to change your entry point. They are a highly respected business - and safety is always top priority for them. I am speaking from many, many years of doing business with them. They are top notch.

I KNEW there would be nice people like you on the board! I'm feeling better...

Nice quote cowdoc. Irony at its best.

I do agree with cowdoc though.
cowdoc 09/15/2011 02:17PM
You'll be fine. The only bother may be the light, south winds that are predicted......may make it a little smokey.

We are headed towards Grand Marais tomorrow afternoon with the intention of entering at South Lake. We are working with Gunflint Outfitters.

Can anyone give me reassurance that we will be okay to go as planned? Is there ANY possibility the fire could keep spreading that way? I've been TOLD it's 40 miles away. BUT the exponential growth from 4,000 acres when I first heard to 11,000 to 60,000 (or 100,00 some say) now is nagging at me!

Last time we were in the BWCA was 2007 so we were totally looking forward to a great fall weekend. What are your opinions? (You ALL are more experienced than me!)

THANKS!

Sam (Worried Wife)
