I agree with Bogwalker. I have seen the blowdown in the areas around Ogish and it is amazing. You can clearly see mother natures distruction. However, there has been significant regrowth as well.

Although we only think of the distruction, which I can not imagine what it would have been like to be there in that storm, we should remember this is nature's way of rebirth.

The downed trees allow younger trees to flurish and provide fuel and animal shelter. The trees that fell in the water have given me great fishing structure for bass and pike. The beavers have been hard at work as I can already tell some of the trees I had once fished are half the original size or gone.

I am looking forward to my June smallie fishing trip. The more I get away from civilization, the more I have realized to simplify my life.

The area around Knife, Ogish, Jasper, Alpine got hit pretty hard by the July 1999 storm. If you were there before the blowdown what you will find now is parts of all the lakes will have started regenerating but you will still be able to see the trees all blown down and lined up in the same direction. Many of the trees broke off between 3-6 feet up in the air so there are 3-6 foot stumps rotting in places. Some of my favorite campsites were devastated, especially on Ogishkemuncie (Island camp north of portage into Mueller used to have alot more cover and trees).

The good news is the area is coming back. The wildlife is easier to spot, there is fire wood (as long as there is no fire ban) and the vistas are extraordinary from the latrine on many campsites (LOL).

Enjoy the time. You will notice the blowdown, you will be amazed at the power of mother nature, but it won't keep you from having a safe and enjoyable time in the wilderness.

We are planning a trip up the Moose and into the south arm of the Knife for the same time frame. Haven't been to this part of the BWCAW since the blowdown and am a little apprehensive as what we will find. Spent last June on Fourtown and fought to keep enough fish to eat at night. Blame that on the weather and hoping for better this year. Can't wait to wet a line, the winters are so long.

We do roughly the same as you, camp on Ogish and day trip to other lakes. Maybe our luck was not good last year because of the weather, but we did not do well around Ogish and the surrounding lakes in early June. We were fishing mostly for smallies, but wit the weather being out of whack and Ogish being deep and cold, we did not catch many fish.

We rescued the trip by leaving Ogish and fishing other smaller shallower lakes. I am blaming our bad fishing on the weather though. The groups who we spoke to coming out while we were going in were very disappointed as well.

We really only target smallies so I don't think I will be much help. There is a small waterfall in one bay on Ogish, maybe you could fish there for Walleyes???

Any information or places I should consider trying to site seeing or smallie fishing?

I welcome any input, suggestions or advice you have regarding that route.

We are either going the first or second week of June. We haven't confirmed anything or requested a permit yet. We expect to do that soon.

Our preliminary plans are to camp on Ogishkemuncie and take day trips. We aren't really targeting smallies, but hope to catch those along with walleye, pike, etc.

How is the fishing in Ogish and the surrounding lakes?

You are the first person I have spoke with who actually seems to go that route. That is the same route we take. We end up staying at a place on Ogish for for a week. I enjoy that route and have fished there a few times now.

I don't know if Ogish is the right lake for a spring smallie fishing trip. The lake is deep and cold.

Any suggestions??

What week are you going?

Where are you going?

My group is making plans for an early June trip through Alpine, Jasper, Ogishkemnucie, etc. We're hoping to catch a few smallies ourselves...

Is anyone making plans for 2005 yet? My buddies and I are going in June 11th for a smallie fishing trip. Last year when we went at that time the weather was WEIRD! Then again, the whole season was different.

Any plans from anyone else??
