I think you're best bet will be to targeting smallmouth by fishing the edges of current near portages around rapids. A leech or half crawler on a #4 hook with a couple of split shot about a foot above the hook or a 1/4 oz jig is about all you need. Here are a couple of suggestions that will give you multiple rapids to fish in a short amount of time.

Lake One entry point and then go west down the Kawishiwi River. Your first portage is only about a 10 minute paddle away and then just after you complete that portage, there is a rapids that comes into this small lake. Fish that awhile and then head over to the northwest corner where there is a portage to continue downstream. Complete that portage and then come back around and fish the current for this rapids. Another hour or so paddle downstream will bring you to a longer portage, maybe 60 rods, with another set of rapids to fish after the portage and then not more than 5 more minutes downstream is a small waterfall you can fish below.

South Kawishiwi River entry point. Once on the river head west, which is actually outside of the BWCA but you will never notice the difference. There are four or five portages, starting almost immediately, around rapids down to a waterfall all within just a few miles paddle.

My step dad and I are staying at our cabin on Vermilion this weekend but wanted to try fishing in BWCA for a day. Was wondering if there are and lake close to an entry point where we could catch good numbers of Pike and Smallies. Neither of us have ever fished BWCA and we will have a 7yr old with us and we are willing to portage for good fishing.
