Gee, could ya cut me a deal on the Everest3 or a Transcend, GearJunkie? My local place wants $1300 for an Everest2!!! They sell some used, but wouldn't give me a price on those today. I have to talk to their person in charge of that ... I'm thinking that discussion will never happen. I can get either one of those machines for under $350 online... $1300 would be my total cost if I went crazy and bought 3 extra batteries ... If you can't I won't be disappointed. I'll just keep looking. My next trip may not happen until mid September .....

So weight isn't your issue.

Has your physician ruled out a deviated septum as to part of your obstruction?

Just some thoughts on sleep hygiene. Buy the best sleeping pad you can find. Sleep on your side or stomach. Bring some type of nasal spray (ocean mist?). Use breath right strips. If you decide to use an oral appliance I'd still use the above also.

Been selling cpap for 3 years now. There's not much you can do for a 7 day trip. Semi operators use large UPCs, even then you'll never get the run time youll need. There are some new machines out with ECCO mode. Like the fisher paykal ICON. You'd get more run time using this machine in ECCO mode while using a battery. Still no where near 7 days.

Good luck with your trip.

Yes, but what KIND of batteries is important to me. I know that it's possible with a marine battery (40+ lbs each) but I am looking at entire setups that weigh less than 5 lbs. I can handle that! Hopefully somebody can tell me tomorrow at one of my local stores what these batteries weigh (Everest3 and Transcend).

thanks for all of the input. I'm going to try the mouth piece before I go and see if that works. I'm not sure that I want to tow a canoe full of batteries and that's looking to be the only other option. Again thanks for the input.

And my $$$ infusion has started to arrive :) I will be checking one of my local stores this weekend to see what they have, what their pricing is, and the pros/cons of some of the different portable machines. I am going to assume they have the Everest3 but not the Transcend.

These are options for us Cpap users.

Transcend

and

Everest 3

The Everest was the only thing available the first time I checked into this. I am left wondering how solar chargers would work with this, whether a "crank" charger would be better, and whether 2 batteries would be enough for 3 nights with my setting. (I think it's 12. I need to be re-tested, and have my prescription re-upped before I order one ...not to mention a $$$ infusion! haha)

I'll let you all know what I come up with, I refuse to haul around a few marine batteries!!!

mutz,

I tried an oral appliance for a couple of years before going cpap route. It was an orthodontist-fitted piece that took me a long time to adjust to. It would work fairly well when I kept it in but no where near as good as the machine. I plan to take that along with me this year as my back up plan.

Correspondence I just received from my cpap therapist tells me I'll need to spend about $300 (not insurance covered) for a special 12 volt battery. He also told me many people opt to use marine batteries and they only last 2-3 nights before a recharge so some will take more than one battery along. Ummmm, don't think so.

thanks for the responses after 14yrs it hard sleeping without it , will try the mouth guard type.

I'm guessing the CPAP was provided by the insurance so the one you have is the one you're stuck with. I was provided a CPAP several years ago and it drove me nuts. After about a year and a half I was able to convince my health insurance to provide an oral device that pulls out my lower jaw. I think I do fine with it and can take it anywhere anytime.

The one I have was custom designed out of thermoplastic and pricey but you can pick up an oral device on the internet for about $40 that will be good for a month and does the same. You may want to try it- I think the last time I checked there was one called a "snoremate". If it works, then you'll be good to go!

I contacted my sleep therapist yesterday inquiring about what's out there for batteries and the length of time they last, rechargability, etc. He said he'd get back to me soon. If there are reasonable size and weight solutions I'll consider taking it.

I'm not holding my breath over not taking the machine for a week or so. Bad choice of words?

Yes, sometimes sleep apnea is not caused by weight. Losing weight will help with your #'s, though, and may reduce the danger a bit. It is my DREAM to just "lose weight" to lose the sleep apnea ...

but at 170 and 5'11", you're probably thin enough!!!

See my post on linked thread...;)

Try losing some weight. Then you won't need the cpap.

I still haven't figured that out yet, Mutz. But my first step is to get a portable one that runs on a battery so that I can get a few nights sleep when in the BW.

I have a friend who keeps a few chargers similar to this that also have plug-ins for when his power goes out at home. But I haven't found anything suitable weight-wise for the BW.

I've got this thread with some ideas for chargers/etc.

I’m lucky enough that I don’t need my CPAP anymore because of weight loss. Here is a link with some information from last year.

CPAP
bapabear 02/01/2011 06:31AM
Very satisfied CPAP user. I got it a few weeks after my BW trip last year so this is new to me. World of difference when I wake up now with headaches and tired feeling a thing of the past.

Even though my machine will break down relatively small I just can't see bringing it for a week with the space the machine, hose, mask and battery (probably multiple since I was told battery life was about 1-2 night's worth)will occupy. Therefore I'm planning to leave it behind for my next trip.

My travel partners usually have me set up my tent a distance from them for good reason.
mutz 01/31/2011 10:35PM
Will be going to Quetico in Sept for 7 days and I use a c-pap. If anyone has used one on trip, how did you keep a battery charged or charge a battery for a week? I'm miserable sleeping without it. The up side is with out it I snore and when I snore even the alpha bears stay out of the camp. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
