"griptilian"

sounds like a knife that won't let'cha go!
Drahthaar 12/10/2010 09:23AM
I've got the Mini Griptilian in yellow handles.
It is very nice knife, had it for about 6 or 7 years now. I'd think the mini would be more pocket friendly than the larger version, yet big enough to use for field dressing deer. Never had a problem sharpening them either and I use a double sided stick that has those tiny dots in the stone.

Check out this knife. For the price, compared to what you're getting for $119 for the Ritter, I think this is a lot more knife, and a lot more fun to carry on a wilderness trip. Black aluminum handle with textured rubber inserts and black coated blade. The knife has a safety to ensure the blade locks really tight. Good size blade, and the handle is shaped to fit your hand well for a good grip. Very well made. The link is a video review of the knife. billgknapp

I swear, honey, cross my heart and hope to die! This is the last [knife, axe, stove, pack, paddle, tent, tool, rod, reel] I'll EVER buy! All the signs are there, "just updating" "I already have 2 but it's a good quality knife" I agree with Koda...he's hooked :)

I have to agree with you two guys ;-) ... They need to start a GGGA Got to get gear addiction group( Spin off of AAA ;-). Always telling the wife this is the last thing I need. But as far as knive's go my old military K-bar is my one and only. But axs on the other hand are my weekness.

Merry Christmas Rich!!

Here is some Rittergrip info you may find useful (or not):

Torx head:
T6 for clip screws (I once had to tighten the clip screws)
T10 for pivot screw

Blade grind angle:
30 degree angle edge (15 on each side)

Sheath:
Bianchi Accumold 7303 Single Mag/Knife Pouch, size #2 or size for Browning. If you get one, get the version with the snap - not the Velcro. This is the sheath that originally came with the full size Rittergrip. Or was it sold separately? I can't remember. It tends to fit a tad loose - some complained about that, but it didn't bother me.

Oh, you all are missing out. This is an example of your next knife, if not your last. When you talk about one-hand operation, knives like this have it. Of course you would need to be a police officer or active duty military personnel* but if not more practical, then definitely more fun. Check this one out. Knife link

Rich11 11/16/2010 09:11PM
ya i ordered the plain edge. and i suck at sharping knives so i figure i will just send it to benchmade to have it sharpened cuz they have the life time sharpening service. but it cant wait to get it! its supose to be here thursday!!!

I've used a Spyderco Sharpmaker with the standard two types of ceramic rods ever since I've been using Rittergrips with very good results. I'd highly recommend the Sharpmaker.

Most of the Rittergrips are plain-edged, though he does provide one combo-edge version for those who desire it. My own preference is the plain edge.

I think some people call the steel a semi-stainless. I was unfortunate enough to have someone in my son's Scout troop put my Ritter Mk3 (fixed blade) through a bleach sanitizing solution and air-dry it. That left some corrosion spots that had to be buffed out - smoothing the stonewashed finish. I was kind of bummed.

Benchmade are very nice knives. The hardness of this blade is 58-60, stainless steel. You will need a good sharpening stone, I would recommend something with diamonds in it. This is good news bad news. Bad news is it will take you some time to get that great edge, good news once you get it just right it will stay sharp for a long time. I would question the serrated edge. Once they get dull very hard to sharpen again. I use a Gatco three sided stone for the blades that I have with varied results. See if they make the same knife with a non-serrated blade. Serrated edges are for cutting rope or cord. If that what you do a lot of by all means get this knife. Plastic handle and stainless steel sounds like just the thing for the BWCA.

Knives are just like axes and guns: "I am always just one away from having enough"
gutmon 11/05/2010 06:30AM
Hmmmm- at those prices I can buy and lose 5 or 6 of my Kershaw folders that I currently carry all the time. That should get me through the rest of my life.
Rich11 11/05/2010 01:43AM
Thanks alot Ken im ordering a ritter for sure that thing looks like a beast!!! But the ones with the orange handles dont come out till the end of November so I guess ill have to wait awhile. And I know its a stupid question but does it come in the regular blue benchmade boxes or something else??
kennk 11/04/2010 09:27PM
Yup its a S30V blade. Cost for the orange fullsize is $119.

Order them from

http://www.knifeworks.com/DougRitterKnives-Gear.aspx

They are the exclusive distributor of Doug's knives.

Ken how much do they cost? And is it s30v steel? becase of it is it would be the perfect knife i have been looking for. i perfer the s30v steel over all others
Koda 11/04/2010 12:30PM
I think the gear addiction makes the thought of anything being "last" optimistic.
kennk 11/04/2010 08:55AM
I strongly recommend the orange handled "Rittergrip":

http://www.dougritter.com/dr_rsk_mk1.htm

I carry the smaller black-handled one daily - at home and work. Its in my pocket right now.

I used to carry the larger version when I'm outdoors camping or whatever, but last fall I thought I'd lost it and was quite upset about its handle being black - since it would have been nearly impossible to find in the tall grass. Last Christmas my wife surprised me with the larger orange-handled version. I LOVE IT!!!

I'll let you read about it at the web site. I have lots of cheaper knives, but these Rittergrips are well worth the price.

Probably the last folder you'll buy ... unless your wife buys you another.

It would be hard to lose as it looks like it will glow in the dark
Unas10 11/04/2010 05:07AM
At that price it should be the last knife you ever buy:)
Rich11 11/04/2010 12:34AM
So ive been updating some of my gear and i have been wanting to get a new folding knife. I already have my 2 babys that I take with me which are my buck vanguard s30v and my leathermans charge tti. And im crazy about knifes if you cant tell. But I was looking at the benchmade griptillan with the orange handles. By the way I dont carry all 3 at once. But i figure it will be last knife i buy unless i lose one. But its a good quality knife and it would be hard to lose. What do you guys think??
