Under! Always under! I don't know how anyone could be so silly as to put it INSIDE the tent. Duh!
[there, that should keep us busy 'til the ice goes out. LOL!]

yes, typar more durable. more tear resistant, better uv inhibitors, better color. have used truckloads of this product. if you can get a piece of housewrap free, take what you can get.

My mistake same co just diff products. I checked out the Dupont www and they dont really say what the diff was other than its uses. It seems that Typar may be mopre durable according to what they list as its usage yet it may also be more permeable. I am confused.

typar (not tyvek) is the way to go for a footprint. don't know a builder?-just walk up and introduce yourself, explain what you are looking for, and you might be surprised. building wraps are roll goods (say 100') and you can end up with short pieces that are useless as housewrap, but perfect for footprints. be nice, you might get it free.

I'll stay out of the Innie/Outie debate for now, but we did give Tyvek a try as ground cloths on our last trip (both Innie and Outie, if you must know). We also had plenty of rain on the trip for giving it a good testing. Overall it worked fine, though my wife did feel some moisure seeping through some of the more wrinkled areas. I'm not sure if the water actually came through here or if we had condensation issues. But either way, the Tyvek didn't seem to be much of an advantage size-wise over regular tarps. If you can get it free, it'll work fine and save you money over having to buy regular tarps. But if you're looking for something compact and light-weight, I don't think there's enough of a difference.
On our next trip we plan to try Bogwalker's advice and use plastic painter's tarp. This will definitely be more compact and lighter-weight (and cheaper for those of us who don't know someone in the construction business).

I thought I remember seeing a strand regarding using Tyvek as a ground cloth and rain tarp. Can't find it now. If using it for waterproofing the tent, is it better to use under the tent, like a footprint, or covering the floor inside the tent? If inside, do you sleep right on the Tyvek?
I have a friend who is a builder and I can get some from him. The price is right; a barbeque, a few beers, and a good evening's conversation and company.
