bogwalker	09/28/2006 06:33AM As Uncle Moose posted it can be done but it is a very difficult bushwack under good conditions. If you intend to go this year, given the extremely Low water levels this fall, the route from Rock Island to Clearwater may be next to impossible. This route goes through the Weasel Lake PMA (Primitive Management Area) so if you intend to camp on Rock Island you need the special permit from the USFS office in Ely. If you are going after October 1st I am not sure you would need it, but I would check with them to be sure. The portages are not maintained and the former campsite on the SE end of Rock Island has no latrine or fire grate. I have done this route twice, but both times it was spring-early summer when water levels were high to close to normal. In low water the marshy path between Rock Island and Clearwater may be a walk in knee high muck. If it's cold it will make for miserable to very dangerous conditions. If I were going this way this year, even with my knowing the route by having done it before, I would not attempt it given current conditions.

Not a walk in the park but easier than the Pagami Creek route. Give yourself about 4-5 hours or so to get from Lake 2 to Clearwater via Rock Island. Or better yet stay on Rock Island one night. Its nice being a stones throw from Numbered Lakes and still having total solitude! The Rock Island Campsite is real nice, rock sloping into the lake, natural rock recliner with a moss seat-back in the SE corner of a small bay with a nice view of the sunset. Pretty close to 5 star without any amenities."
Scrubb	09/27/2006 09:47PM You know, the more I look at this, the more I'm convinced that my buddy's map is bogus. Could someone just please confirm that we can get from Lake Two to Clearwater and on to Gabbro?
Scrubb	09/27/2006 09:41PM I have two maps. One says that there are unmaintained portages to Rock Island Lake (and through to Clearwater Lake) from Lake Two. The other does not list any portages to Rock Island and on to Clearwater. Wondering if anyone can let me know if one is able to get from Lake Two, throuhg to Rock Island, and on to Clearwater, Gabbro, Bald Eagle, etc.
