One item regarding the Bell/Wenonah composites I have seen is that they do employ a plastic handle rather than a carbon fiber handle. For some reason the carbon fiber handle just feels more natural to me.

Timitkin, you are correct, carbon fiber paddles could blow away.

TG are you saying Zav makes paddles for Bell/Wenonah? I beleive that to be correct.
rlhedlund 08/25/2009 01:39PM
Huge $$$ difference between Bell and We no nah.
tg 08/25/2009 01:03PM
as far as i can tell both wenonah and bell relabel or have certain carbon fiber models made for them zavarel. too many commonalities. they are likely comparable to the ZRE rec and have a plastic handle and slightly heavier layup.

A friend loaned me his carbon fiber paddle, and I noticed two things immediately...it was so light it almost wandered as I used it, and the blade didn't seem to have as much surface as a "normal" BB or similar. I didn't really mind the smaller surface, because I looked like I was really working hard, but I was actually pulling less water. But for aesthetics, I really like the wood. And as for aluminum and plastic, I give those to the people who have never paddled before, especially the teenage boys. The people who throw the paddle ashore at the landing--I couldn't believe anybody would do that, so I never covered that in the instructions.
gbusk 08/24/2009 08:51PM
White, I think you need one and then you can change you handle to "blackH20" :)
whiteh20 08/24/2009 08:12PM
No, not the carbon fiber paddle!! You have went to the dark side!! Kevlar, now carbon fiber? What next?
Needleguy 08/24/2009 07:40PM
This thread has me researching them also.
kanoes 08/24/2009 07:38PM
zaveral

its $25 extra for anything other than a 12 begree bent.

$21 cheaper if you buy a factory second.

$20 off coupon code is out there also.

GraniteCliffs 08/24/2009 07:35PM
Too many positive comments. Now I am interested. May I ask the price range of the pure carbon lightweight paddles?
kanoes 08/24/2009 05:20PM
yeah, it did feel like it was empty. i should have weighed it, im sure it weighed more than the paddle.
gbusk 08/24/2009 04:38PM
I brought my wood paddle out on Lake Calhoun today along with my bent shaft carbon fiber because I wanted to see if I want to also get a straight shaft carbon paddle. I was barely able to lift the 52" BB straight shaft after using my Zaveral for an hour or so.

By the way, I don't think any stores actually stock true carbon fiber paddles. They have composites, but I believe they are still quit a bit heavier than carbon fiber. If you are going to drop the cash, you may want to order from Zaveral to get the carbon fiber IMHO.

Kanoes, when your box arrived from Zaveral, did you think it was empty? By the way, your Zaveral will hold up in rivers as long as the rapids are no greater class I or II.

I came so close to picking one up this year when I was sitting on an REI gift card for $200. I waffled and then spent it on a Big Agnes EM tent. I have since seen and held a few carbon paddles that, except for the color, felt awesome.
God willing, there is always next years gadget/equipment list for Christmas and Birthday. Gotta love those gift certificates. Also gotta love the equipment that allows the older crowd (including me I guess) to continue to paddle and portage.
kanoes 08/23/2009 05:44PM
a quiet snobbery though. :)
Kiporby 08/23/2009 05:40PM
Geez. First it was Taj 3 snobbery, then Bell snobbery, and now graphite paddle snobbery?

What's next? Quetico snobbery?

Should there be a disclaimer posted on the gear forum? Something to the effect: WARNING! Long-term exposure to this site may be detrimental to your wallet.

I also tried TG's paddle on wing night 2 and as of now it is on my list of improved and lighter weight gear to purchase. Third on my list after a CCS Lean plus and pack.

I guess that is the trouble of hanging out on this site, you get great reviews of equipment to spend your money on.
Merganser 08/23/2009 11:50AM
I lay paddles on the ground all the time. Of course they are always under the back of a tarp rigged lean-to style so the won't get stepped on.

I had a chance to paddle one of these, thanks tg, just briefly at Wing-Night II and the difference is amazing. I haven't taken the plunge yet but it will happen eventually.
andym 08/23/2009 10:52AM
Kanoes ..... Welcome to the dark side. They are black after all.

As for strength... I agree that no paddle should be left lying on the ground. A
misstep won't necessarily break them but why risk being up the creek without a....
Ours stay strapped into their straps for portaging in the canoe.

bojibob 08/23/2009 10:45AM
So, my plan to go ahead and use the aluminum and plastic outfitter paddles isn't a good idea?
timatkn 08/23/2009 10:27AM
"keep off the ground to avoid breaking??"

ALthough I don't have a carbon paddle I practice this with my wood paddles. Since the ground is not perfectly flat up there too easy for someone to step on the shaft and break it. I assume the carbons are so light you need to lash them to a tree to keep the wind from blowing it back down onto the ground or even possibly blowing it away.

Why not the PRO? Now you'll have to discover the difference between 10oz and 7oz.

I agree with jeriatric. Andy at Tuscarora did me no favors by loaning me his 8oz carbon paddle for 5 days.

The carbon paddle that came with my Bell Magic has a double bent wooden handle. It probably weighs around 16-20 ozs. I'll never sleep soundly now until I go all the way.
wetcanoedog 08/23/2009 12:20AM
keep off the ground to avoid breaking??--am i missing something here?
outside of not using my wood paddles for pry bars breaking one is not something i worry about.is this a light but weak issue?
Jeriatric 08/22/2009 09:37PM
If I never test a carbon paddle, I'll never think I am missing something.
Mort 08/22/2009 08:37PM
Just curious for possible future consideration, what other brands of carbon paddles are out there besides Zaveral that are durable, a good value and warrant a look at? Or is Zaveral pretty much heads above everything else at this point in time?

kanoes 08/22/2009 04:38PM
its is a second (small bubble on the back of the blade) and i used a coupon code tg gave me for an additional $20 off.
gbusk 08/22/2009 04:36PM
I'm guessing it's a second, K likes a deal and who can blame him.
mr.barley 08/22/2009 04:29PM
Did you get a second or did you spring for the full priced paddle?
kanoes 08/22/2009 04:24PM
its a zaveral z-medium. 10 oz.
gutmon 08/22/2009 04:08PM
So what brand/model did you get?
kanoes 08/22/2009 01:37PM
"Sad thing if you are like me, you already have spent enough in wood paddles to have bought one, if not two carbon fiber paddles."

boy, isnt that the truth!
Buskg 08/22/2009 01:24PM
So, you bought a carbon fiber K?

Sad thing if you are like me, you already have spent enough in wood paddles to have bought one, if not two carbon fiber paddles.

One thing I do when in camp, is BDB them to a small tree to keep them off the ground to avoid breakage.
mc2mens 08/22/2009 12:38PM
No doubt. I rented a pair of carbon paddles this year and loved them. They were so light and responsive. My arms and shoulders did not tire at all. Their light weight allowed my 8 year old son to paddle so much longer than he could have with wood or plastic/aluminum.
rlhedlund 08/22/2009 12:27PM
Welcome to the family!
kanoes 08/22/2009 12:05PM
just got back from a morning paddle...to get more used to the magic, but primarily, to try out a new paddle.

i paddled out into the lake for a ways with my normal BB then switched to the carbon. i thought, "well, this IS alot lighter. it has such a smooth, quiet entry and exit too". so i paddled with it for about a half an hour before i decided to dip the BB again.....

it felt like it had turned to lead, or a brick, or a waterlogged piece of driftwood. it was amazing how fast muscles get used to things.

i take back anything bad ive ever said about carbon fiber paddles. convert here.
