If you can handle the extra weight the screen tent is an awesome luxury. Late nights playing cards, bug free meals etc.

I took a screen tent this spring for the first time and glad I did. The black flies just about drove us nuts till I got ther screen tent up. I never believed the stories about the black flies leaving you lone when you are in a screen tent but its true the flies just crawl harmlessly up to the top of the the tent.

eureka USED to make a screened lean-to. sides and top are coated nylon....front is screen with a zipper in the middle. sets up easily without poles. its about 8x8x6' high. great windbreak for cooking, even without bugs. weighs about 3.5 lbs. i have one.....too bad they dont make it anymore! maybe ebay? coghlans.com Product is travellers mosquito net. Great, easy set up, no poles, line between trees. 2 pounds. Great for 3-4 people. Or get two and jury rig together.

Yep. I do. When I first started, I took a regular ol' screen tent minus the poles. I used rope, cord and ingenuity to string it up. I anchored the sides with rocks rather than stakes. To get in I just lift a rock and slide in under a wall rather than messing with a zipper door. Of course, it also functioned as our tarp. Sometimes I'd take our extra "regular" tarp and pitch it lean-to style on the windward side of the screen tent. This acts as a wind break, keeps blowing rain from coming in, and acts as a "closet" for gear so vaulable screened area isn't wasted.

It worked well enough that my trip mates insisted that I bring it every year. After a time, I bought an Eureka VCS (something like that) which is a tarp with a screen insert. When I go with that group of friends, they still insist on it.

It is nice for those buggy supper times. It's good to eat in relative peace. I use a PIK mosquito coil inside it shortly before we're going to use it. You could also bring a can of Raid or something to spray inside. Kill off those bugs that are trapped inside.

A screen tent is a little extra weight and bulk. I guess you have to decide if the trade off is worth it. Every year my group votes that it is.

The weight of a screen tent vs the weight of preventative clothing... the nod goes to the preventative clothing... Pretreat with permethrin before you go and take a good insect repellent... another option when the wind is not blowing is a Thermacell insect repeller... Also camping in a spot where there is a breeze helps!

I just bring head nets, long sleeve shirts and long pants in June and early July. Much easier to lug around for the little bit of time you need them.

Just wondering if any of you have ever packed in a screen tent?
My son & I have been going to the bdub for 4 years now and last year the heat & mosquitos drove us out 2 days early.
