In terms of your big Cohibas, if they're Cubans you have to smoke 'em in Quetico; if they're Domincan Cohibas, then the US side is okay. Either way, leave one stashed for me on the third campsite in on Horseshoe, please!

Wine Boxes: 3 and 5 Liter. I burn the cardboard and pack out the bladder. I never burn plastic, it is specifically prohibited in Minnesota (they may not catch me, but I would know).

Plastic will burn completely to ash. However, some plasitcs require a full hot fire. Many people throw trash in the fire as the fire is burning out,and the plastic doesn't fully combust, then they just leave what is left -- hence all the junk we find in fire pits. Weather you CHOOSE to burn plastic is another issue. Others burn the paper/foil hot chocolate packs and don't realize that the foil layer will not burn -- hence all the foil in the fire pit ashes.

I'm not really up on low impact camping, and am still learning, but to the best of my knowledge plastic does not burn completely and always has something leftover. Have seen many firepits full of all kinds of crud that didn't burn up. I believe you are suppose to pack out what you bring in.

In answer to your question about burning, I usually travel in the Quetico, where there are no such restrictions. In the Boundary Waters, if some burnable plastic trash hapened to fall into the fire, I would be tempted to leave it rather than risk taking it out (wink, wink).

I use a recycled plastic pint schnapps bottle for my scotch (Glenlivet) and maduros all the way!!! (as the song goes - not to short and not to fat around! :)

But gee to answer the question, I repack wine in plastic pop bottles for my wife - no problems in several trips.

We usually bring brandy. I put it in empty saline bottles used for surgery. They have a double seal on the lid. If you know anyone in the medical field they are easy to get. 250-500&1000 ml sizes. I also put oil, syrup & powdered milk into these bottles. These can take quite a beating and are very light.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess the most sure fire method is to try before I go. As far as the trash goes I burn what I know will burn down to ashes. Otherwise I pack it out.

CanoeKev has brought up a subject that I have often thought about. Burning of garbage in the BWCA. I know that the BWCA Trip and Planning guide from the USDA Forest Service states that the burning of trash is illegal in the state of MN. I do not burn plastics but I do burn paper products. What do other members do? (Guide)

I will second motdur's recommendation of black box wine. It is suprising good, and travels well. I would recommend a Fuente 858 Maduro for a cigar.

Just use a soft drink bottle. They are nearly indestructible, and the tops stay on well. No need to bother cleaning Nalgene bottles -- just burn it when the wine is gone.
Flying-Finn 04/17/2006 04:47PM
I know it is not wine, but we get a kick out of Baileys and coffee. Just fill the Nalgene and tie it to the back of the canoe while on the water. I think I read an article somewhere that stated Nalgenes make good humidors.

Have you tried boxed wine? Try "Black Box" brand. Unless you are a sophisticated sommelier, this is a great choice for the BW. Check out the review from Consumer Reports.

Not a problem. Go for it!!
Beemer01 04/17/2006 08:37AM
I like your tastes! I take my wine - and for that matter other adult beverages in the plastic bottles that my wife buys bottled water in. They are lighter than Nalgene and absolutely impart no flavor to the booze.

Has anyone stored red wine in a lexan bottle in the BW. How did it work if you did. If not what does work well. I can't help thinking a glass of wine and a big cohiba sound good about dusk up there.
